Celebrating Women’s History Month

Korean American Family ServiceCenter’s Chair Emerita Aiyoung Choi

Honored by Office of NYC Comptroller John Liu

<by Joy lee> In celebration of Women’s History Month, Aiyoung Choi, Chair Emerita of the Korean American Family Service Center (KAFSC) will be honored by the Office of New York City Comptroller John Liu on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Surrogate’s Courthouse, 31 Chambers Street, New York City.

Aiyoung’s passion for raising the value and status of women has been the core principle around which she hasdedicated most of her personal life. After coming to help KAFSC as a nonprofit consultant in 1989, she stepped in to take over the reins of the faltering organization and served as its board chair for nearly ten years, spurring it to the level that it is today – a leading organization serving women and families in the Korean American community and beyond.

KAFSC’s mission to help abused women has grown to include counseling and services for the whole family, with primaryfocus on preventing violence. Today its work includes raising awareness about family and partner violence, support groups, special programs for children, mentoring for adolescents, workshops on parenting, and classes for job readiness -- all of which are critically needed.

Sarah BJ Sung, KAFSC Board Chair says, “All of us at KAFSC are thrilled for and proud of Aiyoung. Aiyoung believes fervently that when you lift up a woman, you help her family, her community and all of society. She is a role model and mentor to many, and exemplifies the very best in compassion, leadership, and service. We are also grateful to Comptroller John Liu for recognizing her years of dedication to empowering women in the community and worldwide.

In addition to being chair emerita and current board member of KAFSC, Aiyoung is also on the boards of the New York Women’s Foundation and Manhattan Country School. She co-founded and serves on the board of Asian Women Giving Circle, and enjoys a lifetime membership in Asian Women United.

Besides serving on various boards, she is also an advisor to a number of organizations led by women, including theKorean American Community Foundation,White Wave Dance Company, D2 Designs, the Korean American Behavioral Health Association, and the Doublestop Music Foundation.

Raised in Korea, China and Japan, Aiyoung has two sons, Carlos Garcia in Washington DC and Cris Garcia in Hong Kong. She lives with her husband Gene on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
